Kitchens have become larger, multi-purpose spaces that take on a central role in the home. As more activity takes place in the kitchen, the layout and workflow matter more than ever. Many kitchens are now organized into work zones: food prep, cooking, baking, dining, study, even pet zones.
What about a beverage zone? Beverages are a key part of kitchen storage and prep. Coffee or tea in the morning, drinks for the kids in the afternoon, wine or cocktails in the evening. When you have people over, one of the first things you offer is a drink. A designated beverage zone simplifies storage and access, particularly when you have children or guests in the home. Here are five ideas for incorporating beverage centers into a kitchen remodel.
1. A Separate Beverage Station
If you have space and budget, a distinct beverage station works as a standalone area for storing, preparing, and serving drinks. This could be a freestanding hutch or a separate section of built-in cabinetry. Storage for glasses and drink supplies, a wine rack and beverage refrigerator, space for a coffee maker (or a built-in one), and dedicated counter space for prep. Position it away from the general flow of traffic so family and guests have easy access without getting in the way of cooking.
2. A Specialized Bar
Are you a wine connoisseur? A fan of bourbon? A home barista? Design the beverage area around your favorite drink. You might even have two areas: a beverage bar in an open plan seating area, plus a separate coffee station in the kitchen.
3. A Wine or All-Purpose Beverage Refrigerator
If you don't plan to designate enough space for a full beverage bar, a beverage refrigerator gives ready access to chilled drinks away from the cooking area. Store cold drinks for kids and guests so they can help themselves without interfering with dinner prep.
4. A Built-In Coffee Maker
For coffee lovers, a built-in coffee maker is a real upgrade. Brands like Wolf and Miele make built-ins that integrate cleanly with the surrounding cabinetry.
5. A Designated Cabinet and Countertop Area
This may be enough if space is limited. Find an area where you can store drink supplies, display glassware, and put a coffee maker. The beverage station doesn't have to be large or complicated, just what your household needs. We dig into kitchen layout in our layout guide.
