A self-cleaning bathroom may be the stuff of fairy tales, but it's possible to design a bath that's much easier to keep clean and tidy. A remodel is the perfect time to get the details right. Here are five tips.
1. Declutter
Any amount of cleaning has little impact if the room is full of clutter. A remodel is the perfect time to declutter. Throw away or recycle everything you don't need, no longer use, or that's expired. Think about which items must be available in the bathroom and how often you use them. Use the new design to organize what's left and create proper storage. Clear countertops, floors, and shower surfaces are easier to clean once you can actually see them.
2. Customized Vanity Storage
The primary source of storage in most baths is a vanity cabinet. Vanities form an integral part of the room's style, and offer storage for basic toiletries and cleaning products. Customized storage options include drawers for electronics with built-in plugs, pull-out laundry hampers, and inserts for razors, hair products, and makeup. We dig into bath storage in our bath storage guide.
3. A Clear Floor
Bathroom floors are challenging. Moisture, dirt, and the awkward angles created by the vanity, toilet, shower, and bath all make floor cleaning a difficult job. Use customized storage to keep the floor clutter-free. Minimize cleaning angles by incorporating a floating vanity or wall-hanging toilet, which gives you full access to the entire floor. Larger format tiles with fewer grout lines are easier to maintain than detailed mosaic patterns. Save mosaic tile for one focal point.
4. Shower Design
Showers experience an onslaught of water, dirt, and soap scum daily. Make cleaning easier with a more minimal design. Trade the traditional shower enclosure for a frameless glass shower or an open shower design. It's much simpler to clean one solid piece of glass than to work around a metal-framed door.
5. Hangers and Hooks
Make sure there's a place to hang towels, bathrobes, and clothes while getting ready. With well-placed hooks and towel bars, towels are always on hand when you step out of the shower. Family members no longer have an excuse to drop towels on the floor or drape them over the shower door.
