When you think of bathroom storage, you probably think first of a vanity cabinet, the centerpiece of most remodels. You may even consider a medicine cabinet, or if space allows, a linen cabinet or floating shelves. All these elements work together to neatly stow toiletries, towels, and bathroom tools.
Typically, a bathroom design includes more than one source of storage, but storage options must be placed so they don't overpower the floor space or impede traffic flow. A primary bath has different storage requirements than a guest bath or powder room. Recessed bathroom storage is an ideal addition that adds valuable storage without impacting the footprint. Here are several ways to include it.
Shower Storage Niche
One of the most popular types of recessed storage is the shower niche. An ideal place to keep soap, shampoo, and other items you need in the shower. Niches come in all sizes and configurations, and larger showers may include more than one. The niche often becomes a focal point with unique, contrasting tile designs inside.
Bathtub-Accessible Shelves
If you enjoy a relaxing soak, the last thing you want is to climb out of the tub to grab bubble bath or shampoo. Recessed storage in a wall next to the bathtub is an unobtrusive way to keep things at arm's reach. A tiled niche could even hold candles for the perfect soothing atmosphere.
Recessed Medicine Cabinet
If you want a medicine cabinet but don't want it jutting out over the sink and vanity, a recessed medicine cabinet could be the answer. Set into the wall, it offers as much space as a standard cabinet but sits almost flush. A mirrored cabinet serves double duty as medicine storage and vanity mirror, or you could customize the front in a wood finish to match other bathroom cabinetry.
Wall Cabinetry
Every inch of space matters in an effective bathroom, so look at vertical storage too. A shallow recessed cabinet or shelves over a toilet or in a spare patch of wall can hold extra towels, rolls of toilet paper, or other essentials. Particularly useful in small baths with less vanity cabinet space. We dig into broader bath storage in our bath storage guide.
