A bathroom renovation is a significant project that transforms the look and feel of the room and adds value to a home. The many decisions along the way include everything from layout to tile to light fixtures. One key consideration: how to make the most of natural light.

Natural light enhances the ambiance of any room. It provides a connection to the outdoors that improves outlook and feeling of well-being. In a bathroom, natural light makes the space feel more spa-like. Soaking in a tub next to a large window, surrounded by a view and flooded with natural light, is the kind of bathroom that feels like a retreat. Here are six ways to make the most of natural light in a bath remodel.

1. Change the Layout

Look at the layout and think about how it would work differently. You might be able to put a shower or soaking tub next to a window, letting natural light from that window filter through the rest of the room. A new or more open layout accommodates the flow of natural light.

2. Add Windows and Skylights

Windows, glass block walls, and skylights bring more natural light into the bath. Add a large window in an unused wall, or pair up two smaller windows. Skylights work in a bathroom situated in an interior corner of the home that limits available walls for windows. They also give a connection to the outside, with views of the sky or trees.

3. Add a Glass Shower Enclosure

A shower enclosed by a solid wall or frosted glass and a shower curtain blocks light flow. A frameless glass enclosure lets light reach that corner of the bathroom. The reflective nature of the glass also helps natural light spread through the rest of the room.

4. Open Shelving

Open shelving allows more natural light to flow through. If you're lacking sufficient light, consider open shelving in place of or in addition to vanity cabinets. Open shelving also provides storage for towels, baskets with toiletries, and decorative items. Ceramic, white glassware, or white towels reflect light more readily.

5. Reflective Surfaces

Mirrors and other reflective surfaces help any natural light go further. A large mirror in a prominent place extends the reflective surface throughout the room. Mirrors are especially effective when positioned opposite a window or other natural light source.

6. Color Scheme

Color scheme has a significant impact on how much natural light shows. A brighter, lighter color scheme reflects light; a darker scheme absorbs it. A great bath can use natural light with any color scheme, including darker palettes. Balance lighter and darker elements: bright white accent pieces, open shelving with white items, a large mirror, or a bright glass tile backsplash that reflects light.
