A cluttered home adds unnecessary stress to busy lives. An easy and instantly rewarding place to spring clean is your primary closet. Set aside a couple of hours and you can step out of your next shower and open a perfect, fuss-free closet.
Here are five steps to getting a closet clear, organized, and ready for the new season.
1. Clear Out
Take everything out of the closet, categorizing items into groups on your bed. Yes, everything. The only way to do a full clear-out is to go through it all. Removing all items from shelves, drawers, and hanging rods also lets you thoroughly clean the closet before putting things back.
2. Clean Out
Use this opportunity for a full cleaning. Dust inside and outside the closet and remove cobwebs from walls and ceiling. Wipe down light fixtures, doors, and baseboards, then vacuum thoroughly. Treat any carpet stains and mop flooring. Dust shelves and wipe the top of rods. Get rid of broken hangers and replace them.
3. Sort Out
Go through each clothing category and sort into three piles: recycle, donate or sell, and seasonal. If you have items you intend to fit into again, put them with the seasonal clothes and give yourself a year. Then put this pile into vacuum-suction bags to store under the bed, or in an attic or basement. A piece of chalk wrapped in cloth prevents stored clothes from getting damp.
4. Space Out
Return clothes to the closet, grouping by category and color and evenly spacing them so they can air. Try turning all hangers one way; after wearing something, swap it around to hang in the opposite direction. At the end of the season you'll know exactly which items you never wore and can donate them. Put bags and shoes on shelving without piling them up. Special shoes can go in labeled boxes. A customized closet design helps with this organization, set up to easily store every pair of shoes, jeans, and formal wear.
5. Box Up
Accessories can be difficult to store. Categorize by color and type, keeping frequently worn items accessible. Hang scarves and belts around hangers or store them in clear boxes for easy identification. Boxes in drawers are perfect for socks, t-shirts, and other small items. Lavender sachets among these add freshness.
