Cabinetry styles are always changing in bath design and often take their cue from kitchen cabinetry. Styles like industrial, minimalist, and spa bathrooms continue to be popular. Here are ten things to consider when deciding on cabinetry for a bath remodel.
1. Black
Gray was the dominant color for years; black has been gaining ground. It's been used in light fixtures, matte faucets, and showerheads for some time, and is now a popular color for vanities. Dark wood contrasts beautifully with white and neutral surrounds, and black cabinets make a bold statement. If you're not ready for all-black cabinetry, gray with accents of black is a step in that direction.
2. White
White countertops lend a classic look to black cabinetry, but keeping everything white is a clean, fresh style that won't date. Good for a remodel where you may sell down the road. To layer neutrals, cooler tones (grays, silvers) read more sophisticated than creams and beiges. A classic white vanity accented by a gray or beige countertop and flooring is an updated traditional look.
3. Wood
Wooden pieces like freestanding vanities are showing up more often. A piece of furniture in its own right, these unique vanities bring warmth and character. Incorporating as much wood as possible balances an otherwise white bath.
4. Freestanding Vanity
Modern vanities don't always go straight to the floor. When the cabinet sits on legs, the room opens up. Or go fully freestanding with a floating vanity for a contemporary style that really opens up the floor space. Make sure flooring goes to the wall if you're only replacing the vanity.
5. Open Shelving
Open shelving is popular thanks to the spa-bath direction. Shelves make a room look larger and luxurious, especially with freshly folded towels and candles. Vanities and overhead cabinets often include open shelves under their doors to complement open shelving on the walls.
6. Storage
While we want to make the most of bathroom cabinetry, it can't overpower the design. Make the most of every available area for extra storage. Hidden and corner cabinets, units over toilets, and under-space storage in vanities greatly reduce clutter, leaving open shelving to display curated items.
7. Sink
Drop-in sinks can look dated. Vessel sinks remain a winning choice and become a focal point, especially in a smaller bath. They sit on top of a vanity, adding instant glamor. Undermount sinks are the classic option and the cleanest, letting cabinet and countertop style shine. Their low-maintenance, simple style feeds the need for minimalism.
8. Hardware
Cooler tones are popular: brushed nickel, then chrome, outsell gold and brass. Classic brushed nickel stands the test of time, is stain-proof, and goes with any other color or finish. Rose gold appears in cute handles or knobs and can be easily swapped out.
9. Industrial Style
Industrial styling has been popular in kitchens and is now showing up in bath designs. Edgy, industrial vanities give a modern feel. Industrial sinks with black fixtures pair well with brightly colored cabinets to balance the urban style.
10. Countertop
Engineered quartz countertops have become popular in bath design after taking over the kitchen world. Durable, non-porous, hygienic, easy to clean, and able to mimic other stones and surfaces. Many colors available, so you can choose a countertop that complements the cabinetry. We compare countertop materials in our countertops guide.
