Laundry is a never-ending task, particularly in a busy household with kids. Work clothes, school clothes, and sports gear pile up faster than you can keep up. It may never be your favorite chore, but it doesn't have to fill you with dread. Here are ideas to make laundry more bearable, and maybe even enjoyable.
Sort in advance
Step one to making laundry bearable is to have it sorted in advance. Laundry baskets designed to sort everything into lights, darks, and delicates mean loads are ready to toss in. Baskets under a counter in the laundry room, or on shelves, both work. These can also be incorporated in a bathroom or bedroom design.
Make it a family task
You're not the only one creating dirty clothes, so why be the only one cleaning them? Get everyone to sort their own laundry and give everyone an age-appropriate job. Even small children can help put clothes in the washer or dryer. Older children can start the machines and fold, and everyone can put away their own clothes.
Get the right machines
You don't need the largest or most expensive machines, but carefully review your home's needs and find the right machines for the job. A designer can help you review product choices as part of a home remodel.
Make the laundry room bright
Your laundry room doesn't have to be plain or dark. Whether you do laundry in the basement or in a designated laundry/utility/mudroom, make the space bright and beautiful. Plenty of cabinet storage, a utility sink for hand washing and rinsing, a countertop, and an area to hang clothes to air dry. A unique backsplash, a personal sign, or artwork brightens the room. Add a comfy bench where you can sit and read a book while waiting for the spin cycle to finish.
Have a schedule (or don't)
Some people like to do laundry in one day, others prefer to space it out over the week. A laundry schedule helps the family know when their favorite top will be washed, and lets them set time aside for their own laundry tasks.
