Winter brings shorter days, colder weather, and more time at home. Whether you're cooking, entertaining, crafting, or just relaxing with a book on long evenings, here are tips to make your kitchen the coziest place to be.
1. Don't Get Left Out in the Cold
A kitchen remodel is the perfect time to install new flooring, so consider underfloor heating. Energy-efficient (heat spreads evenly from the ground up), and adds value to a home. Stepping onto a heated floor in winter is genuinely lovely. A wood-burning stove is an option if you're not redoing flooring. Check the chimney and heating filters before cold weather sets in.
2. Cover Up the Cracks
Make sure your home's windows are ready for winter. Even a tiny gap will let wind whistle through the kitchen. The best fix is to upgrade the windows as part of a remodel. Otherwise replace cracked panes and seal problem areas.
3. Layered Lighting
Lighting matters more in dark winter days than any other season. Dust and clean bulbs and lampshades. Layer your approach: strong task lighting alongside softer pendant and mood lighting. Fixtures in warm colors and materials add to the cozy feel. We dig into kitchen lighting in our lighting guide.
4. Reset Your Storage
This is a good time to defrost fridges and freezers, give them a clean, and re-stock with winter goods. Make extra soups and casseroles to freeze. Organize recipes by season. Bring out mugs, blenders, roasting tins, crockpots — items you're more likely to use in winter. Now you're ready for cold weather and hunger.
5. Floors
Rugs and runners are an easy way to transform a floor. Carpet works well in the living-area portion of an open kitchen. Tile and natural stone conduct heat well, perfect with underfloor heating. Hardwood floors need care but are worth it for the high-quality finish and naturally warm surface.
6. Color
Color matters when creating a warm kitchen. A statement wall in a rich tone creates a cozy corner. If your design is minimal, try brightly colored cabinets accessorized with warm metals or wood accents. Velvety brown stands out against white finishes, making the kitchen crisp but luxuriously warm.
7. Seasonal Touches
When the weather is bleak outside, bring in colors, textures, and scents full of depth. Warmly colored cushions, oven mitts, tablecloths, and dish towels. Bowls of pine cones, fruit, or nuts. Spicy candles and woody herbs on the windowsill. Cheery tableware welcomes friends and family.
