If a bathroom or kitchen remodel is on your radar, here are design directions worth considering as you start planning.
Quartz Countertops
Quartz is one of the most popular choices, and for good reason. It's durable, stain-resistant, looks great, and has lots of color options. We compare countertop materials in our countertops guide.
Technology in the Kitchen
Smart home technology is more prevalent than ever. Appliances are getting smarter, with dishwashers and ovens controllable by smartphone. Hands-free or motion-sensor faucets are popular for ease of use during cooking and to avoid spreading germs. Add a TV, wireless speakers, and Wi-Fi for music, video tutorials, and watching the game while you prepare snacks.
Technology in the Bathroom
Build in charging points for phones and tablets. Include power outlets inside drawers with customized storage for beauty tools. Wireless music systems and TVs can be incorporated into a bath. Some bathrooms even include smart toilets.
Neutral With a Twist
Neutral is still the most popular palette, but that doesn't necessarily mean all-white. Gray, beige, greige, and taupe are all becoming more prevalent.
Color and Contrast
If it fits your style, bold accent colors are increasingly popular, particularly blue tones. This can take the form of a contrasting island, brightly colored appliances, or even colorful sinks. Black stainless appliances are gaining ground. Two-tone kitchen cabinets are another option, typically with the upper cabinets in a light color and lower cabinets darker.
Tile
Unusual shapes, patterns, and textures are gaining ground. Tile is also a way to add color through a colorful backsplash or feature wall.
Brass Faucets and Hardware
Brass is making a comeback in an updated way. Polished chrome and satin nickel still lead, but polished brass and rose gold stand out and pair well with gray, blue, and green palettes.
Kitchen Sinks
Deep sinks are popular, along with large-arc pull-down faucets and hands-free options.
Customized Storage
Customized storage inserts are essential for any kitchen. From spice storage to pull-outs to cutlery drawers, there are inserts to keep every fork, bowl, and small appliance in place. Built-in waste and recycling bins are also a must.
Lighting
Lighting is key in any space, but kitchens and bathrooms have particular needs. Bathroom lighting needs to be multi-layered around the vanity, mirror, and shower area. Larger, bolder light fixtures are gaining ground in both rooms.
